Frequently Asked Questions
Questions About My Services
I am licensed to provide psychotherapy to clients located in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Florida.
I currently see clients on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy. There are a few legal exceptions, including situations involving imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, or when required by law.
I am not in-network with any insurance companies. However, many clients have out-of-network benefits that may reimburse a portion of the cost of therapy. Upon request, I can provide a monthly superbill that you may submit directly to your insurance company for reimbursement.
Many clients appreciate the privacy, flexibility, and autonomy that come with paying privately. When insurance is not involved, your treatment is not subject to insurance company requirements, limitations, or review processes. You also have the freedom to choose the therapist who feels like the best fit for you.
I require at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged the full session fee.
You can call me at +1-646-828-6300, email me at info@heidielias.com or book a call with me directly through the website. We will begin with a brief phone conversation to discuss your needs and determine whether my practice may be a good fit. If appropriate, we will then schedule a complimentary 20-minute Zoom consultation.
General Questions About Therapy With Me
Finding the right therapist is important. I offer a brief phone conversation before scheduling a consultation so we can discuss your concerns, answer your questions, and determine whether my approach is a good fit for your needs and goals. A strong therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in successful therapy.
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. We will discuss what brings you to therapy, explore your goals, and begin identifying the patterns or challenges that may be keeping you stuck. You are never expected to share more than feels comfortable, and we will move at a pace that feels right for you.
I integrate talk therapy with Somatic Experiencing to support lasting healing through insight, nervous system regulation, and body-based healing. Together, we explore the roots of your struggles while also addressing how stress, trauma, and difficult life experiences may still be affecting your nervous system today. Overcoming the effects of childhood trauma becomes attainable, and long-lasting.
Not necessarily. While Somatic Experiencing does not require you to retell every detail of difficult experiences, many people find it helpful to talk about important events and understand how those experiences continue to affect them today. This is one of the reasons I integrate talk therapy with Somatic Experiencing, allowing us to explore both the story of what happened and how those experiences may still be affecting your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and nervous system.
We will move at a pace that feels manageable and supportive. This combination of insight and nervous system regulation often leads to deeper and more lasting healing.
Many people come to therapy with a good understanding of their history but still feel anxious, reactive, stuck, or overwhelmed. Insight is important, but it is not always enough. By combining talk therapy with Somatic Experiencing, we can address both the emotional and nervous system patterns that may be keeping old struggles in place.
Absolutely. My practice is grounded in the belief that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, compassion, and dignity. I welcome clients of all gender identities, sexual orientations, races, religions, abilities, backgrounds, and life experiences. Your identity is never a barrier to receiving support, understanding, and high-quality care.
Yes. While shared experiences can sometimes be helpful, meaningful therapy does not require us to have the same background. In fact, our differences can create opportunities for deeper conversations, greater self-reflection, and new perspectives. My role is to listen carefully, remain curious about your experience, and seek to understand your unique perspective.
Yes. Research has shown that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many concerns, including anxiety, trauma, stress, relationship challenges, and self-esteem issues. Many clients appreciate the convenience, privacy, and comfort of meeting from their own homes.
Questions About Trauma-Informed Therapy
Trauma-informed therapy focuses less on “What is wrong with you?” and more on “What happened to you?” It recognizes how past experiences can shape your emotions, beliefs, behaviors, relationships, and nervous system. Therapy provides a safe and supportive space to understand these patterns and create lasting change.
Many adult struggles, including anxiety, self-criticism, relationship difficulties, difficulty trusting yourself, chronic stress, and challenges with boundaries, can stem from unresolved childhood experiences. Often people do not realize that their current struggles may be connected to how they were treated earlier in life.
Yes. Therapy can help you understand why you prioritize the needs of others, fear disappointing people, or struggle to speak up for yourself. As you develop healthier boundaries and greater self-trust, it becomes easier to make choices that reflect your own needs and values
Difficulty setting boundaries is often rooted in fears of conflict, rejection, disappointing others, or being perceived as selfish. Therapy can help you understand these fears, strengthen your confidence, and learn how to set healthy boundaries while maintaining meaningful relationships.
Many people struggle with anxiety despite having successful careers, supportive relationships, or stable lives. Anxiety is not always a response to what is happening in the present. Sometimes it reflects earlier experiences that taught your nervous system to remain on high alert. Therapy can help you understand the roots of your anxiety while supporting your nervous system’s ability to feel more settled and secure.
Questions About Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-based approach to trauma therapy that helps regulate the nervous system and resolve the lingering effects of trauma. Rather than focusing only on thoughts and emotions, Somatic Experiencing helps you notice physical sensations and develop greater resilience, regulation, and emotional well-being.
Somatic Experiencing is a gentle and collaborative process. You are not required to relive traumatic events in order for Somatic Experiencing to be effective, though at times it can aid in the process. We will pay attention to sensations, emotions, thoughts, and nervous system responses in a way that helps you feel more grounded, regulated, and connected to yourself.
Yes. Somatic Experiencing adapts very well to online therapy. Because the work focuses on nervous system regulation, physical sensations, emotions, and internal experiences, meaningful progress can occur remotely. Many clients are surprised by how effective this work can be through telehealth.
