Trauma That Remains Unresolved Leads To A Nervous System That Stays on Alert

Trauma doesn’t always look like a single dramatic event. Often, it shows up as a persistent feeling of unease – tightness in your chest, a racing mind, difficulty trusting others, or a sense that you’re always bracing for what might happen next.

Many people try to “move on” by pushing painful memories aside. But unresolved trauma doesn’t disappear with time. It often lives on in the nervous system, shaping how you feel, relate, and respond to stress – sometimes without you fully realizing why.

In my trauma-informed therapy practice, I assist adults to heal trauma at its root using a blend of psychotherapy and Somatic Experiencing® (SE).

Signs of Unresolved Trauma

Unresolved trauma can affect your inner world even if you rarely think about the past.

You may feel “fine” on the surface but still experience:

  • Persistent anxiety or hyper-vigilance
  • Emotional numbness or disconnection
  • Difficulty relaxing or sleeping
  • Low self-worth or shame
  • People-pleasing or fear of conflict

Even if your mind has blocked certain memories, your body may still respond as if danger is present. These signals are invitations to slow down, listen inward, and focus on healing.

How Childhood Trauma Disrupts Development

When trauma happens in childhood – through abuse, neglect, chronic stress, or emotional unpredictability – it can interrupt key stages of development. Instead of learning safety and connection, a child may learn to stay in survival mode.

This wiring can lead to challenges later in life:

  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Feeling unsafe in your own body
  • Struggling to form healthy relationships
  • Believing you must earn love or approval

These beliefs are never reflections of who you are – they are reflections of what you lived through.

The Body’s Trauma Responses: Fight, Flight, and Freeze

When your body senses threat, it automatically prepares to protect you.

This can look like:

  • Fight: irritability, defensiveness, agitation
  • Flight: anxiety, overthinking, rushing, avoiding
  • Freeze: numbness, shutdown, feeling stuck, dissociation

For children who could not escape harmful environments, freeze can become a default. As an adult, this may show up as feeling emotionally disconnected, chronically overwhelmed, or unable to take action even when you want to.

Seeing these patterns as survival responses, instead of personal failures, often brings immediate relief.

A Mind–Body Approach to Nervous System Regulation

How Somatic Experiencing Supports Trauma Healing

While talk therapy helps make meaning of your story, Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a type of therapy that helps you work through trauma stored in the body.

Together, we gently track your body sensations, which can look like noticing:

  • Feelings of tightness, heaviness, or restlessness
  • Changes in breathing
  • The urge to pull away, freeze, or “go blank”

SE helps your body gradually release old protective patterns so you can feel more grounded and present.

A CASE STUDY

Breaking Free from Cycles of Trauma and Toxic Relationships

When my client began therapy, he was stuck in a painful cycle with his live-in girlfriend. Their relationship was marked by frequent arguments, emotional volatility, and repeated breakups. He would move out during intense fights, only to return a few days later, hoping things would improve.

His girlfriend was a functioning substance user who smoked weed daily, which added to the instability he felt but could not fully explain. My client came to therapy feeling confused, overwhelmed, and unsure of why he kept repeating the same patterns.

As we began our work together, using a combination of talk therapy and Somatic Experiencing (SE), a deeper, more full story started to emerge. In time, he shared that his father had been an alcoholic and physically abusive, and that his mother was emotionally neglectful and also physically abusive. He remembered vividly his mother failing to protect him from a stepfather who was also abusive.

These early experiences had left him with unresolved trauma that was shaping his adult relationships – particularly his ability to recognize red flags, set boundaries, and trust his own instincts. Notably, my client had not previously recognized his parents’ behaviors as abusive and neglectful, because that was all he knew about how families functioned.

Together, we peeled back the layers of his past, gently processing the emotional and physiological imprints of childhood abuse. As his awareness grew, so did his self-compassion. He began to understand why chaos felt so comfortable and familiar, and why he had unconsciously chosen a partner whose behavior mirrored dynamics from his early life.

Over time, my client developed the emotional tools, communication skills, and inner stability needed to make changes. Once he left the toxic relationship he was in, he gained more and more clarity, self-respect, and peace.

Breaking Cycles and Choosing a New Path

When trauma goes unaddressed, it can shape relationship patterns, self-worth, and the choices you make without you realizing it.

Trauma can also show up as:

  • Repeating unhealthy relationship patterns
  • People-pleasing or difficulty setting boundaries
  • Doubting yourself and your instincts
  • Choosing others’ needs over your own
  • Being drawn to relationships that feel familiar but not healthy

These patterns are not signs of weakness. Seeking support is a meaningful act of courage and self-love.

What You’ll Gain From Trauma Therapy

Healing trauma is not only about understanding the past. It is about creating a greater sense of safety within yourself, your relationships, and your daily life.

In our work together, we take a comprehensive, trauma-informed approach that supports:

  • nervous system regulation
  • emotional processing at a manageable pace
  • healthier coping strategies
  • stronger boundaries and self-trust
  • a more compassionate relationship with yourself

As you begin to rely on your inner signals and your own wisdom, you gain the ability to make choices that reflect your values and build a life that feels more aligned.

Being on your own side changes everything.
